Granny's Steak and Gravy

Ingredients
- 3 pounds thick sirloin or round steak
- Salt, to taste
- Cayenne pepper, to taste
- Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
- 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 2 medium onions, chopped
- 1 bell pepper, chopped
- 1/2 cup water, divided
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- Steamed rice, for serving
Method
- Season both sides of the steak with salt, cayenne, and black pepper, rubbing the seasoning into the meat.
- Heat the oil in a large skillet over high heat. Brown the steak well on both sides, turning every 3 to 4 minutes, then remove it from the skillet.
- Add the onions and bell pepper to the pan and cook until wilted.
- Set the steak over the vegetables and add 1/4 cup water. Reduce the heat to medium, cover, and simmer for 1 1/2 hours, turning the steak every 20 minutes.
- Transfer the tender steak to a platter.
- Stir together the cornstarch and remaining 1/4 cup water. Add it to the pan and stir until the liquid becomes gravy.
- Serve the steak and gravy with hot rice.
