Beef and Broccoli

Ingredients
- 1 pound flank steak, thinly sliced into strips
- 1/2 teaspoon ground white pepper
- 1/3 cup low-sodium soy sauce or gluten-free tamari
- 1/3 cup water
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 5 garlic cloves, minced
- 1-inch piece fresh ginger, peeled and grated
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch (optional)
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil, divided
- 1/2 yellow onion, sliced
- 1 large head broccoli, cut into florets and blanched
- Cauliflower rice or white rice, for serving (optional)
- 1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds
- 3 scallions, thinly sliced on the bias
Method
- Season the sliced beef with white pepper.
- Whisk together the soy sauce or tamari, water, brown sugar, garlic, ginger, and optional cornstarch.
- Heat half of the sesame oil in a large skillet or wok over high heat. Sear the beef, then transfer it to a plate.
- Add the remaining oil and cook the onion for about 8 minutes. Stir in the blanched broccoli and cook for 1 minute.
- Pour in the sauce, return the beef to the pan, and cook for about 3 minutes, until the beef is cooked and the sauce has reduced.
- Serve over rice if desired, topped with sesame seeds and scallions.
